Unlocking Ancient Lineages: The Pioneering Genetic Research of Dr. Yehia Zakareya Gad

From Kasr Al-Ainy to the forefront of molecular Egyptology, Dr. Yehia Zakareya Gad bridged clinical medicine and ancient genetics, leading landmark investigations into Egypt's royal dynasties.

Dr. Yehia Zakareya Gad graduated from the Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, in 1979. Following his medical education, he earned his M.D. in Pediatrics before directing his expertise toward molecular genetics. He established a pioneering academic career at the National Research Centre (NRC) in Egypt, rising to become an Emeritus Professor of Medical Molecular Genetics.

As a foundational authority in ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis, Dr. Gad combined biomedical science with Egyptian history:

• Establishing Ancient DNA Infrastructure: Instrumental in founding the dedicated ancient DNA (aDNA) laboratories at both the Egyptian Museum and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC).

• The Tutankhamun Lineage Study: Served as a lead researcher in the landmark 2010 JAMA study that analyzed the DNA of King Tutankhamun to reconstruct his royal family lineage and pinpoint the pathological conditions contributing to his death.

• Forensic Identification of Pharaohs: Led internationally recognized genetic and forensic research to resolve historical lineages, including the identification of Ramesses III and other key figures of ancient Egypt.
