A testament to perseverance and a global pursuit of excellence, Dr. Amr Aref, a 2003 graduate, has carved an impressive path in the field of ophthalmology, scaling the heights of both academia and clinical practice in Switzerland.
Today, Dr. Aref stands as a distinguished Associate Professor and a respected consultant specializing in cataract and glaucoma. He serves as the Medical Director for the Vaud Canton within the prestigious Ono group, a leading network of ophthalmology clinics in Switzerland. This remarkable achievement is the culmination of years of dedicated study, extensive training, and an unwavering commitment to his field.
Dr. Aref's journey began at the University of Cairo, where he laid the foundation for his career by obtaining both his medical bachelor's and a master's degree in ophthalmology. His quest for knowledge then led him to Europe, where he earned a Doctorate in Medicine from the esteemed University of Geneva. He further solidified his expertise with a Doctorate in Ophthalmology from Bénisuef University.
His time in Egypt was marked by rigorous training at the Research Institute of Ophthalmology in Giza, a prominent public institution dedicated to research, training, and treatment of eye diseases. This foundational experience prepared him for a series of advanced fellowships and qualifications that would distinguish him in the competitive European landscape.
Upon relocating to Switzerland, Dr. Aref embarked on a path of continuous professional development. He completed two specialized glaucoma fellowships, one at the University of Geneva and another with the Swissvision group, honing his skills in a key area of his research interest. His dedication to meeting the rigorous standards of Swiss medical practice is evident in his attainment of the Federal Suisse Human Medicine Diploma from the University of Geneva in 2018, followed by the European Board of Ophthalmology and the Federal Swiss Specialty title of ophthalmology.
Further demonstrating his commitment to specialized care, Dr. Aref has also acquired three university diplomas in cataract and refractive surgeries, glaucoma, and retinal photography and macular treatment. In 2023, he achieved the Federal Swiss Specialty title of surgical ophthalmology, a testament to his advanced surgical skills.
Dr. Aref's professional achievements are multifaceted. In his role as a consultant ophthalmologist in Switzerland, he is a valued member of the Ono group and the Swiss Visio network. As the Medical Director of Vaud Canton for the Ono group, he plays a significant role in shaping the delivery of eye care in the region.
His passion for advancing the field is also evident in his research. Dr. Aref's main research interest lies in glaucoma, a field in which he has contributed to scientific literature. A notable 2024 publication in the International Ophthalmology journal on the "Clinical outcomes of an extended depth-of-focus intraocular lens in patients with glaucoma" showcases his active involvement in cutting-edge research.[6]This study, which he co-authored, lists his affiliations with both the Research Institute of Ophthalmology in Giza and the Glaucoma Research Centre at the Montchoisi Clinic, part of the Swiss Visio Network in Lausanne.
